How important is Cardio Exercise when you are past 40?
Cardio, Cardio, Cardio... We all know we need to do cardio exercise but how much and how often? And is it more important that we do cardiovascular exercise the older we get...say, past 40? The answer is YES; we should do some form of cardiovascular exercise at least 3-4 times per week, 20 minutes minimum especially after we turn 40. Cardio exercise is great for the Heart (cardiac muscle) and vascular (circulatory system). A stronger heart works less and is more efficient at doing it's job and a stronger circulatory system will keep you healthier, not to mention helping you keep your cholesterol lower. You can get away with a lot more when you're younger but when you get older you need to start to take care of your body and that starts with your heart.
As far as cardiovascular exercise for weight loss - it will help facilitate the burning of calories, but I have always told my personal training clients...You will never out-cardio a bad diet. I suggest focusing on cardiovascular exercise for a stronger healthier heart and eat a lower calorie diet that includes lots of vegetables (not fried or covered in butter) as your main source of carbohydrates.
